- Jupiter has a busy collection
- of 16 known moons. The largest,
- Ganymede is 1100 miles bigger
- than our own moon, and is in
- fact larger than the planets
- Mercury and Pluto. The four
- "Galilean Moons", Io, Callisto,
- Ganymede and Europa were
- discovered by Galileo in
- 1609. They are large and bright
- enough to be seen with the
- smallest telescopes and even
- binoculars, Jupiter's jeweled
- necklace stretched out in
- a single line.
-
- What Voyager discovered what a
- miniature solar-system, each
- moon with its own distinct
- character.
